Where is your spirulina from?

Our raw spirulina is harvested locally in Malaysia and is not imported frozen or stored over long periods of time.

Why is ‘Get it Fresh’ Raw Harvest Spirulina available as a paste and not as a powder or tablets?

Once dried, the enzymes in the spirulina are dead and the nutrients are not readily available. To turn the spirulina into a dry powder, it needs to be dehydrated to be stored in warehouses or plastic packaging for a long period. Drying methods vary among brands, but spray-drying is one of the most common techniques. Many products contain additives to prevent the powder from clumping or – if the powder is pressed into pills – some form of glue. Get it Fresh spirulina is truly raw in its natural state and unprocessed, containing live enzymes our body needs to absorb nutrients. We do not process our spirulina into powder, tablets or water-diluted forms.

How is your spirulina ‘raw harvest’?

Our spirulina is harvested daily from the aquatic farm in the early morning and packed in our glass jars within 24 hours. It is not manipulated or processed in any way or converted into powder or tablet form. Our spirulina is enzymatically active and full of energy – the way nature intended. At Get it Fresh, raw means raw! Our Spirulina is truly raw in its natural state. NOT a processed powder stored in warehouses or plastic packages for years.

What does raw spirulina taste like?

Raw spirulina is quite tasteless and odourless in its freshest form contrary to powder or tablet forms of spirulina which can have a very strong taste. Some people can experience an ‘earthy’ taste or very slight bitterness. Over time, the spirulina can start to have a stronger ‘sea-like’ taste.

Is spirulina safe for consumption?

Spirulina, like many other plant-based super foods, is absolutely safe for consumption by both adults and children. While some spirulina products can contain trace amounts of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic causing contamination or toxicity, at Get it Fresh, we ensure the safe farming and harvesting of the spirulina, adhering to strict hygiene and quality control processes. We also continuously analyse batches of our spirulina with lab tests for contaminant reports. Please consult your doctor or physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How should spirulina be consumed, how frequently and how much?

You are the judge of what you eat, and spirulina is a food, not a medicine, so eating too much will only make you full. Doctors and nutritionists recommend a daily consumption of between 5 and 40 grams of raw spirulina to support an otherwise healthy diet. Larger serving sizes can certainly be eaten to increase protein and nutrient intake. Spirulina is also a very versatile product that can be used as an ingredient with cooked food, as a spread or pesto, in smoothies and even in desserts and ice cream! Spirulina is a good source of B-vitamins and it contains an exceptionally high amount of vitamin B-12. It also contains vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine) and B9 (folic acid). Other vitamins found in these algae include Vitamin, K, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E and Vitamin A. The level of vitamin E in Spirulina is comparable to that of wheat germ and it possesses 4 times as much vitamin B12 as raw lever.

Spirulina comprises of at least 60% protein. A 112 gram serving provides approximately 64 grams of protein. 83% to 90% of this is digestible because, unlike yeast and chlorella, these algae do not have cellulose walls. It has a high net protein utilization ratio (NPU) of 53% to 61%. The high protein efficiency ratio (PER) of Spirulina indicates that your body is efficiently able to use the amino acids. Protein makes up 15% of the body’s weight and is a vital nutrient for healthy growth.

Essential Fatty Acids:
Essential fatty acids are also known as good fats. Since these fats are not produced within the body, they have to be provided from the food sources that contain them. Their main function is to produce prostaglandins that control the body functions like heart rate, blood pressure, fertility and immune system function. Spirulina contains 4% to 7% essential fatty acids such as gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linolenic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA).

Minerals:
Spirulina is rich in minerals required for the body’s daily activities. These minerals are calcium, potassium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, selenium, iron and phosphorus. They aid in metabolism, maintain water balance and improve bone health. Its calcium, phosphorus and magnesium content are similar to that of milk.
